INDEPENDENCIA: BIENAL DE ARTE DE CUSCO es un encuentro artístico internacional, centrado en las artes visuales, pero abierto a un amplio rango de actividades artísticas, académicas, educativas y a todo tipo de propuestas interdisciplinarias.
INDEPENDENCIA: CUSCO ART BIENNIAL is an international art event, centered on visual arts but open to a wide range of artistic, academic and educational activities and to all kinds of interdisciplinary initiatives.
INDEPENDENCIA promueve la estrategia de pensamiento crítico, la pluralidad de visiones y el diálogo abierto. Sus principales propósitos son integrar el arte en la sociedad y crear redes de contacto y colaboración entre artistas, instituciones y la comunidad. INDEPENDENCIA forma parte de la Asociación Internacional de Bienales como miembro asociado.
INDEPENDENCIA promotes a critical thinking strategy, plurality of views and open dialogue. Its main purposes are to integrate art into society and create contact and collaboration networks between artists, institutions and the community. INDEPENDENCIA forms part of the International Biennial Association as an associate member.
TEMA Y FECHAS DE LA PRIMERA EDICIÓN. El tema de la primera edición del evento ha sido la reflexión sobre el Bicentenario de la Independencia del Perú y Latinoamérica a través de distintos lenguajes artísticos, propuestas académicas y educativas. La Bienal cuenta con el Sello Bicentenario, otorgado por el Proyecto Especial Bicentenario (PEB) del Ministerio de Cultura del Perú. Las fechas del evento han sido agosto 15, 2021 - marzo 15, 2022.
FIRST EDITION OF THE BIENNIAL: THEME AND DATES. The theme of the first edition was the reflection on the Bicentennial of the Independence of Peru and Latin America through different artistic languages, academic and educational initiatives. The Biennial has the Bicentennial Seal, awarded by the Special Bicentennial Project (PEB) of the Ministry of Culture of Peru. The event dates were August 15, 2021 - March 15, 2022.
MODALIDADES DE PRESENTACIÓN DE OBRAS ARTÍSTICAS Y OTRAS ACTIVIDADES.
La Bienal INDEPENDENCIA tuvo que restructurar su propuesta inicial para adaptarse a las nuevas condiciones impuestas por la emergencia sanitaria, que obligó a renunciar a todo tipo de formatos relacionados con la aglomeración presencial de personas (exposiciones en salas y museos, presentaciones de artes escénicas en espacios teatrales, eventos académicos en auditorios), optando por las siguientes dos formas alternativas:
1. Formato digital: plataforma virtual para la presentación de obras artísticas; difusión a través de redes sociales; charlas, conversatorios y otras actividades académicas en línea.
2. Obras e intervenciones artísticas en espacios abiertos (públicos y privados) de amplio acceso, o en espacios cerrados con constante tránsito de personas; amplio uso de proyecciones sobre fachadas.
Esta opción por los formatos no convencionales no sólo permitió contrarrestar el efecto negativo de la pandemia en la vida cultural, sino también ayudó a acercar el arte a todos los sectores de la población.

AND OTHER ACTIVITIES.
The INDEPENDENCIA Biennial had to restructure its initial plan in order to adapt to the new conditions due to the health emergency, which forced us to avoid all forms of presentation that would entail the face-to-face gathering of people (exhibitions in halls and museums, presentations of performing arts in theaters, academic events in auditoriums), giving place to the following two alternative options:
1. Digital format: we’ll use a web platform to present art works; communication through social networks; talks, conversations and other academic activities online.
2. Art works and interventions in open spaces (public and private) with wide access to public, or in closed spaces with constant movement of people; wide use of outdoor screenings.
This preference for non-conventional formats not only counteracted the negative effect of the pandemic on cultural life, but also helped bring art to a much wider audience.
PATRONATO CULTURAL CUSCO es la institución organizadora de la Bienal INDEPENDENCIA. El Patronato es una asociación sin fines de lucro enfocada en el fomento de la cultura en la ciudad y región de Cusco, Perú. Está conformada por artistas, curadores, gestores culturales e instituciones que desarrollan actividad cultural en Cusco, entre las cuales están la Alianza Francesa Cusco, el Centro Culturale Italiano de Cusco, el Centro Bartolomé de Las Casas (con la Fototeca Andina), la Corporación Educativa Khipu, la Asociación Educativa Pukllasunchis y el Taller de Fotografía Cusco.
PATRONATO CULTURAL CUSCO (CUSCO CULTURAL BOARD) is the organizing institution of the INDEPENDENCIA Biennial. Patronato is a non-profit association focused on promoting culture in the city and region of Cusco, Peru. It is integrated by artists, curators, cultural managers and institutions that develop cultural activities in Cusco, among which are Alliance Française Cusco, the Italian Cultural Center of Cusco, the Bartolomé de Las Casas Center (with the Andean Photo Library / Fototeca Andina), the Educational Corporation Khipu and the Educational Association Pukllasunchis and Cusco Photography Workshop.
